Los indispensables de un buen Brunch

By | 2 August, 2015 | 0 comments

A few years ago, Spain received a new culinary trend coming straight from New York. Some of us thought it would go away as quickly as it come but it turned out not to be the case, brunch was here to stay as one of the best weekend plans to share with friends or family. However, what is brunch exactly?

Brunch is a meal that, as its name indicates, a mixture of breakfast and lunch and you can enjoy it between the times where you would have these two meals as a substitute to both. The word appeared for the first time in 1896 in the popular British upper-class magazine, Punch. Wealthy English people enjoy a breakfast buffet on Sunday mornings that their butlers left served before taking the day off. The buffet covered breakfast and lunch so that no cooking was needed when the help was not at work.

Today, we still consume it on weekends because that is when we can enjoy the most free time and we are not subject to strict timetables and routines. A good brunch must include succulent sweet and savoury foods, both hot and cold, and also drinks such as fruit juices, coffee or tea.

Which are the brunch essentials?

Madrid soon became one of the best cities to enjoy this new culinary practice, which resulted in the best restaurants in the city working hard to present the best brunch. So, what must a good brunch have?

  • Croissant: cold, grilled, with sweet or savoury ingredients… This is a must and nobody can resist the world’s favourite pastry.

  • Eggs Benedict: the touch of excellence to any decent brunch. It is a tasty, nutritious and exquisite dish which can be served with salmon or Parma ham, always a morning delight.

  • New York cheesecake: the star of American baking and the most popular cheesecake version in the world. This cake of Greek origin was adopted by the United States and today can be enjoyed in almost every brunch.

  • Fresh fruit juices: orange, papaya, peach, apple… or even multifruit! This is the best way to start off a brunch, by enjoying a nice fresh fruit juice that gives way to all the tasty dishes.
