April and May, the year’s most literary months
April and the upcoming May are two months that are important in Madrid’s cultural calendar thanks to the quills, letters and pages that make up books, since these are the two literary months par excellence. Everything begins on the 23rd of April with the celebration of International Book Day, a day that nobody should miss, since it’s celebrated increasingly around the world because a good book can represent it all: dreams to be accomplished, imaginary travels that can come true or stories of yesterday, today and tomorrow which are told by authentic literary masters. It is a day to celebrate that there are fewer things that can enrich someone more than reading a book.
Literature continues during the aforementioned months in the Spanish capital just a few days later with the Antique and Second-hand Book Fair, a fair that, as always, will take place along Paseo de Recoletos and where you can find some real treasures, unique and first editions, glorious works and treasures at incredible prices… in a good way. It will run from the 29th of April until the 16th of May and you can walk on one of Madrid’s great avenues surrounded by old books filled with history.
And lastly, the great literary event of the year: Madrid’s Book Fair, the Feria del Libro of 2016. The fair is still growing and growing every year, which is why it had to move from its original location in 1967, from where it staged its first edition thirty-four years before in Paseo de Recoletos, to Parque del Retiro, where it’s still held today.
There is an increasing number of booksellers and bookshops that show their literary catalogues in this essential event for all reading lovers and, also, for those who love drawing and the other activities that take place in these stands. It will once again take place from May 27th to June 12th and the weather is usually perfect for the event, days that you can enjoy to get up to date with everything that is going on in the literary world and also the classics of yesteryear. If you have children, it’s the perfect place to spend a day with them because it’s important that they start reading at an early age.
