"La disputa", en el Teatro María Guerrero

Drama enthusiasts are in luck. The María Guerrero Theatre in Madrid is the current stage for the unique play The Dispute, which has been part of the programme since January 12 and will continue until March 4. Shows are from Tuesday to Saturday at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday at 7.30 p.m.

The María Guerrero Theatre (National Drama Centre), with its mission of disseminating the different modern drama trends, is located on Calle Tamayo y Baus, in a central location of the Spanish capital, just 15 minutes away from Puerta del Sol, which is where our hotel is.

The majestic building has a Neo-Renaissance façade with a porch, which used to make it easier for the arriving coaches back in the day. Inside, it has a magnificent Mudejar decoration and its spaciousness and interior conditions made it, since its creation, one of the most important theatres in Madrid.

The dispute between Voltaire and Rousseau

It is not often that theatre manages to delve into the ideas of some of history’s greatest thinkers, although this play directed by Josep Maria Flotats actually manages it. Flotats himself stars in it as Voltaire, whilst Pere Ponce plays Rousseau and the play takes place in the former’s home.

Everything revolves around a dialectic struggle in which both philosophers share and confront their ideas on subjects that today are still part of the news, such as equality, education, freedom, God or the theatre itself. They are two very different ways to understand society which will definitely make an impression on all the spectators who go and watch the play.

This theatre play in the centre of Madrid makes the Spanish capital, once again, the perfect city to enjoy art and culture in all of their shapes and forms.
