Who doesn’t like spending an afternoon at the movies in a classic cinema with popcorn and in good company? If you have these tastes and are in Madrid, we recommend that you visit some of the city’s chicest cinemas, which we have compiled below:

Cineteca. Located in Mercado Municipal de Ganados, better known as Matadero (Legazpi area), Cineteca is the only cinema of its kind in Spain that is exclusively dedicated to non-fiction films. Its programme presents alternative, independent and documentary releases and it is also a diffusion platform for new filmmakers.

Pequeño Cine Estudio. With the same spirit as it had in its beginnings in the 1970s yet equipped with the latest 35 mm, HD and digital film and sound technology, Pequeño Cine Estudio (Calle Magallanes) has recovered its old films and thus is a meeting point for true movie fans.

Cine Doré. Located on Calle Santa Isabel, this Art-Nouveau-style cinema was inaugurated in 1912 and has a comprehensive monthly programme which combines Spanish National Archive films and some of the great auteur, classic and experimental movies of all time.

Sala Berlanga. In the Chamberí district, on Calle Andrés Mellado, you can find one of Madrid’s chicest cinemas, named after the late Spanish screenwriter and director, Luis García Berlanga. Its multifunctional space acts as a cinema, theatre, exhibition centre and concert venue. Tickets cost just 3 euros.

Casa de América. This cultural centre created in 1990 and located inside Palacio de Linares in Madrid has its own cinema which shows contemporary Spanish and Latin-American films. Other activities that take place here range from documentary and short film screenings to movie cycles related to current affairs.
