Mercadillo Navidad 2018

Christmas is coming, one of the most special holidays of the year. Food, family reunions, celebrations and other events are just around the corner. Would you like to get away in December? Nothing beats a Madrid getaway to explore the Christmas markets.

Find the best decoration for your nativity scene

The nativity scene is part and parcel of the Christmas tradition in Spain; kings and aristocrats already used them to decorate their mansions at this time of the year. One of the most important crèches is the Belén del Principe, located in the Royal Palace. It has more than five thousand figures and it was brought by Carlos III from Naples in 1760, setting the trend for this Christmas tradition.

Plaza Mayor Christmas Market

This market definitely keeps the tradition alive: you can find the popular figures made of clay and other materials to fill your home-made crèches in most of its 104 stands. Besides, this market also offers a wide range of articles for decorating with Christmas ornaments and also sweets to savour in these holidays.

The Christmas trees are not only part of the square’s decoration, but they are also sold to the public in some of the stands. Lights and novelties are some of the special products of the most traditional market of the city. It opens November 24th until New Year’s Eve, 31st December.

More markets to visit this Christmas

In 2018, the capital offers other spaces where stalls are installed specially for these dates. One of the most important ones is the arts and crafts fair in Paseo de Recoletos, which favours traditional and hand-made gifts. If you call yourself a fan of unique and vintage objects, you cannot miss The Antiques Fair in the Recinto Ferial. Items of the 60s, 70s and 80s are the main protagonists.

Madrid to enjoy Christmas

As you can see, Madrid offers a wide range of options to go Christmas shopping on these dates, whether it is for adding a special touch to your Christmas or for buying presents. And of course, besides the Christmas markets the city in itself becomes quite an experience with its traditional coloured lights and the Christmas wreath that decorated its streets.
