Semana Santa en Madrid

Will you be in Madrid between March 25 and April 1? If so, you will be interested in some of the activities you can enjoy in the Spanish capital during Holy Week.

Firstly, you will find the traditional processions, which take place around the streets of Madrid. During the day you can see different ones but the main ones you must not miss are Cristo de la Fe and El Perdón, which takes place on Palm Sunday from the Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel. On Wednesday, remember to go to Calle de la Salud, where you will be able to see the departure of Our Father Jesús de la Salud, a procession popularly known as “The Gypsies”.

As well as the processions, you can also use your free time to sample the delicious gastronomy on offer in Madrid, because this time of year brings many dishes that you just have to try, from cod croquettes to Madrid-style chickpeas, which you can enjoy in many restaurants in the city. The choice for dessert is simple, because the best thing to order during this special time of year is the delicious torrijas (milk-fried toast).

Continuing our tour of the different activities we can enjoy during Holy Week in Madrid, we must not forget about the sacred music and the tamborrada, a celebratory drum festival which takes place in many of the city’s churches. Sacred music is the one which accompanies processions throughout their journey, whereas the tamborrada is the climax of Holy Week around the city streets.
