Tren de la Fresa

We don’t travel by train like we used to, with the smooth chugging sound in the background which has been replaced by the high-speed train in Madrid and its surrounding areas. Those nostalgic about trains will know what we’re talking about. Fortunately, there are still many routes that allow you to experience the pleasure of travelling in a train from the olden days. We’re talking about the Orient Express or the Trans-Siberian, two mythical and emblematic routes that you can still take. In our country, there are various trains that cover tourist routes and the Strawberry Train is one of them.

The Strawberry Train: from Madrid to Aranjuez

The 2019 Strawberry Train season will begin next Saturday, 13 April and will continue into spring and autumn (in July, August and the first week of September it will be out of service). This train recreates the first train from the capital in 1851, which was inaugurated by Queen Isabella II. At that time, it was the second train to operate in Spain and its track was designed to unite the capital with the Royal Palace of Aranjuez. It had been conceived as a union with the Mediterranean Sea, but it remained in the nearby lands surrounded by the Tagus and the Jarama.

The train departs every Saturday and Sunday at 9:50 from Príncipe Pío station in Madrid and arrives at Aranjuez at 10:45. During the journey, the staff—who are dressed in period costume—offer a tasting session of the area’s exquisite strawberries. At the destination, there are five different routes to take which will allow you to discover the Royal Palace of Aranjuez and its gardens, attend a musical performance, enjoy a boat ride on the palace lakes or discover the Museum of Falúas. Aranjuez is a city with a World Heritage cultural landscape which is only 50 kilometres from Madrid.
