West Side Story en Teatro Calderón

Madrid, a city of music. It may seem like all eyes or on the theatres along the Gran Vía avenue this season, with big names such as AnastasiaThe Physician and The Young Frankenstein taking all the limelight, but there are a number of star productions playing much closer to the Hotel. That includes the classic West Side Story, which will be showing at the Calderón Theatre (Calle Atocha num. 18) until June.

The epitome of musical theatre, this libretto by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is one of few musicals that has managed to transcend the boundaries of its genre and become one of the most representative examples of universal theatre, with a love story that is still as contemporary as ever.

West Side Story, an unmissable item on your Madrid to do list

Romeo and Juliet’s famous love story crosses the Pond to 20th century New York. Two youngsters trapped in the middle of a conflict between the two street gangs that their family and friends belong to: the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.

The musical premièred at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway back in 1957 and will now be performed in Spain entirely in English for the very first time. This production is brought to us by the same company who entertained us with performances such as Priscilla, Queen of the DesertCabaret and Billy Elliot.

The show lasts 2 hours and 40 minutes including the interval and tickets start at €27 for showings from Tuesday to Sunday. Rest assured that you will not be short of shows to see during your stay in Madrid!
