Its importance is such that, according to the statistical data handled by the Madrid City Council, some 113 million people of all possible nationalities pass through it annually and it has a daily traffic of 51,000 vehicles.
It was given its name in honor of the Combate de Callao, which took place in this Peruvian port on May 2, 1866 during the Spanish-South American war.
Even the buildings that frame the Plaza del Callao have historical significance. Among them are the Palacio de la Prensa and the Carrión Building with its well-known neon light of the Schweppes brand, starring on the big screen in several films.
